Faculty Training Institute (FTI) proudly celebrates its 25th year as a leading, national training provider this May. FTI began in 1989 with five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town.  What began as practical and professional training of the highest standard to the IT and project management industry with two product offerings, has now evolved to reach a broader range of individuals. The market niche is to provide training at the intersection of business and technology, where business value can be unlocked.

Although the company was bought by EOH, a JSE listed company at the beginning of 2012, the CEO is still one of the original founding members of the company. FTI is positioned as a strong leader in the business analysis, project management, enterprise architecture, testing and thinking-skills domains in South Africa.

Steve Erlank, FTI’s CEO, attributes FTI’s success to the delivery of enduring value for stakeholders. “We are passionate about developing human potential. Our ethics are unquestioned, and we offer quality products and services.  Our innovation around training and courseware contributes to our success.”  To date, FTI has trained over 6000 delegates and is a trusted skills development partner to hundreds of companies nationally.

“FTI draws only its’ experienced and knowledgeable lecturing staff from both academic and corporate environments,” says Erlank. The company recruits experienced instructors who have a broad theoretical knowledge and are highly experienced in practice for its public and customised in-house courses.

EOH acquired FTI as part of its strategy to introduce

skills development into its Human Capital Division.  The acquisition strategically positions FTI to branch into new territories whilst continuing to meet increasing demand for vocational short courses and FTI’s flagship Business Analysis and Project Management certificate and professional programmes.

“FTI has been at the forefront of promoting the profession of business analysis and has always sought to create opportunities for Business Analysts to network professionally,” says Erlank. FTI was the first education provider to be endorsed by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) in South Africa and hold Charter status. This enabled the firm to offer IIBA®accredited business analysis training programmes.

Furthermore, FTI’s influence in the business analysis sphere has helped to guide the profession in South Africa. It assisted the South Africa Chapter of the IIBA® in its formative years, entrenchingprofessional practice of Business Analysis in the country. In association with the local Chapter, FTI sponsors the Business Analysis Summit Southern Africa Conference (BASSA) annually.

Through a strategic relationship with premier training company, US based, Watermark Learning, a range of new short course offerings have been made available in South Africa.

“The modern world continues to shift towards a Knowledge Economy, where old skills and paradigms become obsolete and new careers and roles emerge.  These roles require multi-skilled individuals capable of high-order thinking with good problem –solving skills across a range of industries and knowledge domains.  FTI’s successful strategy is to proactively identify these roles and create courses and programmes that define and support these roles,” says Erlank.
